Sony announced that the PlayStation 3 demo for the upcoming F.E.A.R. 2 first person shooter from Monolith would only be available for those users who have a subscription to the Qore multimedia gaming magazine launched for the platform sometime last year.

The demo is set to arrive this week, although no official date is available at the moment. The developers are not saying anything about an Xbox 360 demo of the game, which will obviously not carry the same requirements as the PlayStation 3 one.

It must be annoying for those who bought a PS3 to see how the normally free game demos, which are designed to offer players a bite size chunk of a game in order to see if they like it enough to buy it, as they are now being hidden behind the price tag of the Qore gaming magazine, which costs 2.99 dollars for one issue or 24.99 dollars if you plan to subscribe for a whole “season,” which, oddly enough, consists of no less than 13 episodes. Expect a backlash from frustrated gamers soon if Sony keeps up this habit. After all, a lot of people chose the PS3 over the Xbox 360 due to the fact that multiplayer is basically free on the Sony gaming consoles.

F.E.A.R. 2 will pick up the story of Alma and the supernatural occurrences right after the end of the first game in the series. The two expansions not created by Monolith are not considered canon by the developers and they promise they will keep the fast paced combat of the first one, while adding some mech like combat, more scary elements and a coherent story line featuring the scariest little girl seen in videogames, Alma.

F.E.A.R. 2 will be released by Monolith on February 10 in North America and on February 13 in Europe. The game will be playable on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC.
