Forget about cables!

Eye-Fi has come up with a simple, yet efficient, solution to help beginning photographers transfer images from their digital cameras to computers and/or online photo and social networking sites via an existent Wi-Fi network.

The new product is a Secure Digital memory card with wireless support. This translates into the ability to transfer the images without removing the card from the camera or connecting the device to the computer.

However, before being able to do this, photographers have to first plug in the Eye-Fi card in a special USB device and configure it. After this, the card will do its magic.

"During a simple set-up process, users can select from among 17 popular online photo sharing, printing, social networking or blogging sites to share their photographs, and select where on their PC or Mac they want to archive their images. Once the set-up is complete, users can focus on taking pictures and sharing memories - and not on the process of uploading photos from their camera," the press release reads.

The magic is not omnipotent, as the Eye-Fi is unable to connect to "hot spots" or public wireless networks that require the user to log in via an initial web browser 'splash screen'. Moreover, only JPEG files can be uploaded, so while you'll be able to store RAW files on the Eye-Fi, you won't be able to upload them wirelessly.

"Digital cameras have made it extremely easy to take pictures, but the rest of the process is a hassle," said Jef Holove, chief executive officer of Eye-Fi. "The Eye-Fi Card removes the barriers and lets users get to the fun part of sharing and printing their memories. We're putting the magic back into photography," he added.

The solution works with 802.11g, 802.11b and backwards-compatible 802.11n wireless networks and with the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X (10.3 and 10.4). Apparently, Linux has been left out.

The Eye-Fi SD card is only available as a 2GB solution and it can be purchased for $100 from all major retailers in the US.
