Another organizations blackmailed by Rex Mundi hackers

The extortionist hackers of the Rex Mundi group are back. This time, they claim to have breached the systems of Hoststar, a Switzerland-based provider of web hosting services.

The hackers have allegedly stolen some sensitive information from the company’s systems. As usual, they tried to cut a deal with the organization – money in exchange for not leaking the data online.

However, according to Rex Mundi’s statement, Hoststar is not too eager to cooperate.

“Last week, we hacked into the back-end server of Swiss Web hosting company Hoststar (hoststar.ch). We gained access to their customer database as well as the various login/passes used by their customers to connect to the control panels,” the hackers said.

“Unfortunately, Hoststar doesn't seem to particularly value their customers' privacy since they refused to pay us in exchange for the non-disclosure of this data. Therefore, we will publish their customers' data on the Internet on July 3rd unless someone ( a competitor, a mischievous individual ) steps in and decides to purchase this data from us.”

The hackers published an email address where they can be contacted.

In addition, they’ve also leaked some sample data – comprised of database details and customer information – to prove that they’ve really breached Hoststar’s systems.

Up until now, the hackers would disclose the amount of money they demanded from the companies they blackmailed. This time, they haven’t specified the amount.

We asked them on Twitter, but they haven’t responded to our inquiry.

We sent out an email to Hoststar in hope that they can provide further clarifications on the incident. The article will be updated in case they respond.

As far as we know, none of the companies blackmailed by the hackers accepted to pay the ransom money. Their last attempt to blackmail a company was in January, when they targeted Buy Way.
