Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2 is currently available for download, as Microsoft is gearing up to serve the package as an update to all customers. For the time being, Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2 (KB979784) can be grabbed via the Microsoft Download Center and deployed immediately. As the official label of the download indicates, the update rollup is designed to integrate with Exchange Server 2007 SP2, and is not meant for customers running Exchange Server 2007 RTM or SP1.

Chuck Anderson, from the Exchange team, enumerated “some highlights of the product improvements and critical bug fixes: we responded to some of the great feedback we get from the community including two issues posted to the Exchange TechNet Forums about our last rollup: Outlook web access signatures lose their blank line above the signature & Item Retention Period "TimeSpan overflowed because the duration is too long." A couple of painful deadlock issues are now prevented as noted in KBs 978517 and 979219. Two Store crash scenarios were repaired; see KBs 978528 & 979520. Several improvements for meeting request issues are also included in this rollup.”

While Exchange Server 2007 SP2 Update Rollup 3 is currently offered to customers only through the Download Center, this will change come March 23rd. According to Anderson, the update rollup will be served to all Exchange SP2 customers tomorrow through Microsoft Update. KB979784 contains additional information about the update rollup which is bound to come in handy to admins.

“For those of you running Forefront, be sure you perform these important steps from the command line in the Forefront directory before and after this rollup's installation process. Without these steps, Exchange services for Information Store and Transport will not start back up. You will need to disable ForeFront via "fscutility /disable" before installing the patch and then re-enable after the patch by running "fscutility /enable" to start it up again post installation,” Anderson explained.
