Don’t hold your breath on seeing OxygenOS too soon

After the break-up with Cyanogen, Chinese device maker OnePlus had to go back to the drawing board. It needed a custom ROM of its own it could pre-install on its upcoming devices, so the company assembled a team and got to work.

And as expected, OnePlus hosted an event where it officially announced their own custom ROM which they are calling OxygenOS.

The company announced the team that will be in charge of OxygenOS, which includes co-founder of Paranoid Android, Aaron Gascoigne, lead-designer at Paranoid Android, Karim Frenn, former software developer intern at Google and former Microsoft software development engineer, Helen Li.

As you can see, OnePlus has switched sides and has put together a team mostly consisting of Paranoid Android folks.

OnePlus has also been showing off the new logo of the OS, which consists of a red square with a white O symbol plastered in the middle.

We had hoped that the Chinese device maker will offer us a sneak peek into what to expect out of OxygenOS. But that wasn't really the case.

What can we hope to find?

However, they did mention that the new custom ROM will be very much like AOSP, which will be lightweight and efficient. Another highlight is that the team hopes to be able to prioritize battery life.

During the event, OnePlus failed to mention a date on which we can hope to expect the ROM arrive in the wild. The company is pursuing the development of the ROM actively, but that’s all we’re told.

Given the fact that the purported OnePlus One successor has been rumored to arrive sometime in Q3, we dare say the team still has a few months of work ahead of them.

If the announcement of OxygenOS has left you wondering what the custom ROM will actually look like, we’re taking an opportunity to remind you that a few purported screenshots of Oxygen OS leaked in the wild, not so long ago.

Naturally, these aren't images of the final product, but one can’t help but notice that OxygenOS seems to be quite spartan. Everything is clean and flat with the icons boasting a very similar design, although they are very colorful and out there.

Check them out in the gallery below.
