Evolve OS, a Linux distribution that is still under development and boasts a beautiful new desktop environment called Budgie, has just got its third Alpha release.

The new Linux distro is built by Ikey Doherty, the same developer of the Budgie desktop environment. This means that the final product should be the ideal implementation of the upcoming desktop.

One of the key features that this new operating system brings is its conservative approach. Users will immediately find that Budgie is actually a familiar experience, but it looks a lot more modern and crisp.

Another interesting aspect of the Evolve OS distribution is the fact that it integrates the most recent packages, which is something that very few developers try to do. Getting the latest kernel or the latest drivers is not usually a top priority, but Evolve OS is different in this regard.

“I am pleased to announce the release of Evolve OS Alpha 3. This image is only suitable for 64-bit machines, and is not yet EFI capable. This release incorporates all recent updates, including X.Org 1.16.0, MesaLib 10.2.4, Linux Kernel 3.15.6, Firefox 31.0 and the GNOME 3.12 stack.”

“This represents the third and final alpha of the Evolve OS images, as we’re moving towards daily-builds and then beta stages. Please help to identify issues within the system so that we can make Evolve OS as enjoyable an experience as possible,” says the developer of Evolve OS, Ikey Doherty.

As you can see from his announcement, Linux Kernel 3.15.6 has been implemented, along with the latest Mesa and X.Org server. The GNOME 3 stack is only mentioned because Budgie is based on it.

The developer also explains that it will be a while before the operating system EFI-capable. This might be a problem for people who are trying to test the new OS on new hardware, but the upcoming releases will feature this important option.

If you already have one of the previous editions installed, all you have to do is to run a simple command in a terminal:

code
sudo pisi upc
If you choose a USB stick, you will have to use some other application than unetbootin, which is not supported. If you already have a GNOME-based distro, then just use the integrated Disks app.

You can download Evolve OS Alpha 3 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
