Evernote Corp., the people behind the popular note-taking Evernote app, have released a new update for users of their powerful application, delivering stability and performance improvements, as well as updated localizations, and bug fixes.

A Softpedia favorite and freeware pick, Evernote has been designed to help users remember anything, anywhere. It enables them to save notes, which can include handwritten text, or text inside images, and then search them by whatever they can remember about them. For example, if they remember some text inside an image saved in Evernote, there’s a good chance they’ll be able to find it by typing in the words. Evernote does this by using text-recognition technology, which also works for finding handwritten notes.

Evernote is cross-platform, meaning it works pretty much in the same way on a Macintosh computer, Windows PC, or iPhone. You can have one Evernote account, and then install the app on any supported device to keep your notes in sync wherever you are. By saving a note on your Mac, you’ll be sure to find it seconds later on your iPhone, within the Evernote app. So, let’s see what’s new in Evernote 1.7.1.

First off, the developers mention stability and performance improvements, reduced memory usage, and Improved PDF handling. This is always good to hear. Localization improvements have been added as well, Evernote Corp. says, while Evernote log messages are now sent to ~/Library/Logs/Evernote/ and are also viewable in the Help > Activity Log, the company adds. Numerous additional fixes have been made throughout the application, amongst which Evernote developers mention:

- Resolved a problem that created a “.webarchive” file attachment or a message to upgrade to Premium when clipping from Safari; - Resolved a problem that failed to update user information from the server; - Resolved a problem that would fail to find all text matches within a note; - Resolved a problem that caused decryption problems for short encrypted text segments.
