European Union’s law enforcement agency announced signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ENFSI, a network of forensic labs scattered across Europe that provides expert examination in a vast area of fields, including computer fraud.

The purpose of the agreement is to facilitate exchange of information pertinent to the fight against crime.

Europol has already signed partnerships with private companies in the cyber-security industry such as Kaspersky, Mnemonic, CCIS and Intel.

On Tuesday, Wil van Gemert, Deputy Director Operations at Europol, said that strengthening the relationship with ENSFI would help cooperation in the forensic science part of the law enforcement work.

ENSFI’s network of forensic labs was created in 1995 and now spreads to 35 locations in Europe. As per information from the organization’s website, in 2014 there were 62 members in the network.

The area of forensics expertise varies greatly, from crime scene investigation, firearms, fibers, poisoning, handwriting, speech analysis or text linguistics to data recovery and computer fraud.

“Our members already cooperate with Europol with scene of crime and cyberspace evidence. This MoU is a logic step forward to strengthening our partnership and realising a borderless European forensic science area, where both organisations can play an important role, through data and knowledge exchange,” said Üllar Lanno, Chairman of ENFSI.
