The European Union is getting closer to taking several aggressive steps to block off surveillance in the EU.

According to an announcement made by the European Parliament, the civil liberty committee will be taking an important vote this Wednesday on its report on the Parliament’s inquiry into the NSA surveillance of local citizens.

Following the vote, measures need to be approved regarding what steps the EU will take. The list includes the suspension of international agreements on data exchange, which would make it difficult for the United States to track terrorists and compare notes with European nations.

Furthermore, the trade talks between the EU and the US are at risk once more, after being threatened several months ago, following the first revelations about the NSA surveillance programs.

The civil liberties committee will also discuss offering more protection to whistleblowers and journalists.
