14 DAY TRIAL // Eurocom's Panther series of laptops is one of the more capable ones, albeit not as versatile as some might have expected. The company is changing that, though, by extending OS support.
To be more specific, the Eurocom Panther line, or rather the Panther 5SE, has gained support for RedHat Enterprise Server Edition 6.4.
This is a version of the Linux operating system that works best on servers. By extension, this means the Eurocom Panther 5SE will be easy to set up as a server when establishing a survey and/or or military camp somewhere.
“Eurocom is excited to offer an all in one Mobile Server enterprise solution in a Notebook Form Factor able to run RedHat Enterprise Server Edition 6.4, with no server room required,” stated EUROCOM President, Mark Bialic.
“The Panther 5SE is a portable, mobile and scalable enterprise technology, designed specifically for fast growing and dynamic organizations that do not have or do not require a permanent IT infrastructure,” he added.
In addition to the OS, Panther 5SE has certain perks over other laptops and/or the other members of the Panther collection.
For one thing, the battery is swappable. Normally, servers have UPSs that provide 10-15 minutes of runtime, to allow users to finish what they're doing in case of power failure. The replaceable battery renders that time unlimited (provided you have enough spares, or a sure-fire way to recharge them).
The low power use of the Panther 5SE, of under 250W, is another advantage, as normal servers usually need 800 W – 1000 W.
That said, the 17.3-inch Eurocom panther 5SE relies on an Intel Xeon E5 2600 series processor (6 – 8 cores, up to Intel Xeon E5-2687W), 32 GB DDR-1600 memory (max), up to four SSDs (RAID 0/1/5/10) and 1-2 Gb LAN, among other things (ExpressCard slot comes to mind).
All in all, not bad for something that weighs 5.3 kg (11.7 lbs.) and makes do with 80% less energy than traditional servers.
