Pipex Wireless selected Ericsson as their partner in bringing WiMAX technology to Manchester and the surrounding area. This way, the city with almost half million habitants will become one of the first wireless broadband cities from United Kingdom. Planned to be launched at the end of 2007, the WiMAX network will be able to provide high standard broadband services not only for businesses but also for home workers, local residents or commuters within the area.

Another two UK cities already benefit from Pipex Wireless' WiMAX networks, installed, developed and maintained also with the help of Ericsson. The cities are Milton Keynes and Warwick, which are significantly smaller that Manchester, so this time there will be a larger infrastructure to install.

"Our WiMAX system will offer users quick, easy and flexible internet access with upload speeds greater than standard cable and ADSL services", said Graham Currier, the Business Development Director of Pipex Wireless.

Bradley Mead, Managing Director at Ericsson Services Limited, declared: "We are delighted to have been appointed by Pipex Wireless to roll out the WiMAX network in Manchester. This project builds on our already proven success in rolling out the Pipex Wireless network in Milton Keynes and is further testimony of our technology leadership in managing and developing leading edge communication systems."

Supplementary information about the future network and related services will be provided by Pipex after the preliminary work on the network's infrastructure has been finished.

Pipex Wireless was formed by Pipex Communications and Intel Capital in April 2006, with the mission of developing WiMAX networks across UK. It is UK's first service provider that offers WiMAX using licensed spectrum. By owning a national spectrum license in the 3.6 to 4.2 GHz frequency range, Pipex Wireless can set out various new and cutting edge wireless services. Except for Ericsson, other important names in telecommunications and wireless technologies are working with Pipex Wireless, like Nokia Siemens Networks, National Grid Wireless or Airspan Networks.
