Epic Games and their subsidiary company Chair Entertainment have announced that they are working on something called Project Sword, a video game that is powered by the Unreal Engine 3 and will arrive on all Apple portable devices.

Mike Capps, who is the president of Epic Games, said the new game will show how advanced graphics can be on a mobile device, with “intricate levels of detail you don't expect to see on a phone device.”

Project Sword will be playable in full 3D and the control scheme will be based on swiping with the game falling squarely into the hack and slash role playing game genre.

Epic has been interested in creating video games for the iPhone for some time with the company showing the Unreal Engine 3 working on the device last year, with a version of Unreal Tournament used as demo material.

The announcement of the new game comes just as Steve Jobs, the Chief Executive Officer of Apple, stated that the mobile devices his company makes are now the most popular ones for gaming in the go, selling better than the Nintendo DS family and the PlayStation Portable combined.

Apple is also set to launch a new iPod Touch that seems to be designed with gaming clearly in mind, using the A4 chip, a new gyroscope, two cameras and a better screen.

At the moment Epic Games is hard at work developing Gears of War 3, the new title in the long running Xbox 360 exclusive series, which is set to be released on April 5, 2011.

The new game is set to deliver four person cooperative play for the first time in the history of the series and three of the main playable characters will be a women, Samantha Byrne, Anya Stroud and Bernadette Mataki.

Epic Games is also supervising the development of Bulletstorm from People Can Fly.
