Although it has just released the forth upgrade for SQL Server 2005, Microsoft is gearing up to cut mainstream support for this version of the data platform.

According to Christina Gendrano, Program Manager SQL Server Sustained Engineering, mainstream support got both SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and SQL Server 2005 SP4 will end in less than three months, on April 12, 2011.

Microsoft started offering SQL Server 2005 SP4 RTM to customers in mid-December 2010, and the company only recently began pushing the service pack through Microsoft Update.

Gendrano also informed that Service Pack Support for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 is scheduled to come to an end later this year on October 11, 2011.

Customers still running the versions of SQL Server for which end of support is imminent need to start preparing to upgrade to more recent releases of the data platform, preferably those that still enjoy full mainstream support from the software giant.

“Customers are encouraged to prepare and execute on their upgrade and/or sustained engineering plans as early as possible for these SQL versions,” Gendrano said.

“Remaining current on your SQL Server version ensures that your product remains supported per the Support Lifecycle policy. Additionally, your software benefits from the many enhancements, fixes, and security updates provided through the latest releases.”

Of course, the Redmond company doesn’t plan to leave its customers hang out to dry. In this regard, Microsoft is still prepared to offer some assistance to customers running SQL Server releases that have reached end of support.

“For SQL Server 2005 SP3 and SQL Server 2005 SP4, Microsoft will continue to provide technical support which also includes security updates during the duration of extended support,” Gendrano added.

“For SQL Server 2008 SP1, Microsoft is offering Custom Support for companies that have not had a chance to migrate, but wish to maintain their existing IT environment while they migrate to a supported product.

“If you would like further information on Custom Support please contact your Technical Account Manager or Account Representative for additional details.”
