Especially suited for cloud applications and virtualized data centers

Storage solutions are all well and good but, in the end, they are nothing if the data center they are part of doesn't have good enough connectivity technologies, an area that Emulex went out of its way to push forward.

Emulex did not hold back at all when it created the new Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) spoken of in its latest press release.

Fibre Channel is already a very fast way of ensuring connectivity to and from enterprise applications, but the company took things to the farthest extreme it could reach.

Simply put, Emulex claims to have developed the world's fastest FBC Host Bus Adapters (HBAs), the ninth generation of Fibre Channel adapters to ever leave its labs.

They are powered by the Emulex Engine XE201 I/O Controller, the first and only quad-port converged fabric controller with 10 Gb Ethernet support, plus 16GFC and up to 40GbE-based network convergence.

The 8-core chip-powered controller also comes with vPath virtual I/O capabilities, plus vScale workload-based scalability and performance.

In addition to the above, the Emulex LightPulse LPe16000 Fibre Channel adapters promise data center simplicity, GreenState power efficiency, manageability, real-time monitoring and Exclusive BlockGuard Data Protection Offload.

"The LPe16000 family of adapters delivers more than one million IOPS on a single port, enabling high-performance I/O for high-density, business-critical cloud and virtualized data centers," said Shaun Walsh, vice president of marketing, Emulex.

"This adapter is about more than just another Fibre Channel speed bump, it is designed to support next-generation cloud and virtualization environments with our vScale programmable ASIC technology, VM scalability, enhanced quality of service, data integrity and performance management features."

Sample shipments have been going on for several months, so Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have had a lot of time to familiarize themselves with the 16GFC.

The newly started fourth quarter of 2011 (October-December) is when single-channel LPe16000 and dual-channel LPe16002, adapters will be available will start shipping outright.
