“But they hardly let you sing on Glee,” the “President of Television,” played by Leonard Nimoy, tells Jane Lynch when she expresses her intention of singing her way into her hosting duties at the Emmys 2011. Yet sing she did.

Lynch hosted the annual Emmy Awards, which aired live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday – and she made sure she made a grand entrance with a music number that saw her meet some of the biggest stars on the most popular shows of the moment.

Check out the video below to see what we mean by that.

The pre-taped segment opens with Lynch coming to meet the “President of Television” to let him know of her intentions of making her opening segment a musical number.

Nimoy of “Star Trek” plays the “President” but he wasn’t Fox’s first choice, reports online have it. Actor Alec Baldwin taped the skit and then asked producers not to use it after they told him one of his jokes would not air.

After Lynch offers assurance to Nimoy that she won’t be needing Auto-tune because she’ll be lip-synching her way through the musical number, she embarks on a journey through the “vast wonderland” of television.

Because all television is in just one building, Lynch is able to visit various shows, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Parks and Recreation.”

Stars from “Entourage,” “American Idol” (Randy Jackson) and the entire cast of “Mad Men” also appear in the segment, which even included some jokes about Lynch’s hair and how far mankind has come, in that women can now marry women.

However, while fans of Lynch, undoubtedly a very talented and witty actress, must have loved her opening number, some reports note that there wasn’t that much of a difference between her skit and Jimmy Fallon’s of last year.

In fact, the Washington Post writes, Lynch’s opening felt like a re-run of last year – and, because of it, fell very flat on audiences. See here for the full report.
