A new, extended trailer for “Elysium” has been released and, more so than previous promo materials, it offers all the explanation you need for why it’s one of the most anticipated movies of the summer of 2013.

Check it out in full above.

The year is 2159 and, as you can see, humanity is divided: the poor live on earth and strive to make it through to another day, while the rich are up on Elysium, where there is no disease, no war, and no pollution.

Matt Damon plays a former con who is looking to get his life back on track but his big mouth, among other things, won’t let him.

After being exposed to radiation, he undergoes a procedure that would, at least in theory, help him defeat security on Elysium to breach into that world.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”), “Elysium” also stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, and William Fichtner, and will be out on August 9.
