Elton John and David Furnish have been in a relationship for many years and that is why they chose to enter in a civil partnership nine years ago. This was the only legal way the gay couple would be recognized and it was seen as a suitable replacement for a wedding.

At the time, the couple celebrated with a huge star-studded party that included 650 guests. Now, the 67-year-old Elton and the 51-year-old David, have a new reason to celebrate. Gay marriage has been made legal in England and Wales on Saturday, March 29, and the two have decided to go all the way and tie the knot for real this time.

David had a small sit down with the Las Vegas Review Journal and offered some details on the upcoming wedding ceremony, “We all live by example,” he starts his argument “We don’t feel the need to take an extra step legally. But since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation.”

David reveals that this time, they are going to host a small, intimate event, just for their sons Zachary, three, Elijah, 14 months, and a couple of witnesses selected among a handful of their closest friends. This seems uncharacteristic of Elton John, who is notorious for throwing large and lavish parties.

“We do like big parties. Over eight years ago, we had 650 people on the 21st of December at our house in Windsor,” David reminds people. “But with the kids, everything is different. I think what we’ll do is go to a registry office in England in May, and take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses.”

After gay marriage was legalized, David and Elton seem ready to pave the way for other couples. Back in 2005, when the same-sex civil partnership was passed in England, there were among the first couples to take advantage the very day it came into effect.

Following a ceremony at Windsor Guildhall, the couple then held a massive party at their Windsor mansion for a number of celebrities that included Victoria Beckham, Ringo Starr, Elizabeth Hurley, Donatella Versace and Claudia Schiffer.

21 years into their relationship, David admits that he was both surprised and pleased to be able to marry Elton, having grown up with the belief that such a thing would never be possible.

He remembers a certain moment with his mother “I remember trying to come out to my mother and unfortunately going to all the negatives. "You’ll never get married. You’ll never have children. You’ll never be accepted by society. You’ll be prejudiced against. You won’t have a future.”
