Elle Fanning can currently be seen on the big screens in the movie “Maleficent,” a modern adaptation of the “Sleeping Beauty” children's tale, which is also starring Angelina Jolie. Now, reports are beginning to surface that the actress is a distant cousin on Kate Middleton, the future Queen of England.

According to some investigation done by Ancestry.com, the actress who plays Princess Aurora in the movie is a little bit of a princess herself, although we can't be sure of the percentage. Researchers have reached this startling and weird conclusion after they conducted a search through seven centuries of past generations.

Based on their research, it has turned out that the 16-year-old actress and her older sister, Dakota, who is now 20, are both descendants of King Edward III. Hold on to your hats, because this is just the beginning.

The two sisters, both of whom have starred on the silver screen, are proven to be connected with the English monarch who ruled over Britain from 1327 until 1377, through their mother's side. Elle then is King Edward`s 22nd great-granddaughter, which would make her a genuine princess.

But the royal connections don't end there. The same research indicates that the American-born actress shares a common ancestor with a current member of the British royal family, Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. That common ancestor is Edward I, known from history books as “Longshanks.”

This revelation makes Kate and Elle distant cousins and makes them both princesses in their own right. But while Kate has kept close to her royal roots and ended up marrying Prince William, widely regarded as the successor to the throne of Great Britain, Elle has taken a different path in life, that has seen her portray a princess on screen.

It's amazing how small our world actually is and how connected we are with one another. While it's still not certain if the Fanning sisters are going to get an invitation at Buckingham Palace this Christmas, it's still weird to see how people, even famous ones, are linked by family heritage.

Kate will be happy she has made news with her ancestry, rather than her racy photos. Just yesterday, she was involved in a major photo scandal that saw a major German publication run a very revealing photo of the Duchess that was caused by her wearing a loose dress and a gust of wind generated by the spinning blades of a helicopter.
