Elizabeth Edwards, wife of the former presidential candidate John Edwards, has lost the cancer battle. Elizabeth died in her home, days after doctors told her cancer had spread. She was 61.

TMZ reports Edwards had already made her peace with the idea doctors could no longer help her, after a 6-year battle with the terrible disease. She died in her home, surrounded by family and friends.

“Elizabeth Edwards died in her home in North Carolina today – just days after doctors advised her to stop her cancer treatment,” TMZ says.

“According to local reports, 61-year-old Elizabeth – who was married to former presidential candidate John Edwards – had been surrounded by friends and family in recent days including John himself,” the same report notes.

The announcement comes just one day after Elizabeth herself took to her Facebook page to write one final letter to her supporters and friends, after finding out she would no longer be receiving treatment for her cancer.

In it, she expressed her thanks to all those who had stood by her through the ordeal and who had encouraged her to never lose hope and to keep fighting.

She also spoke with resignation about the moment that she knew would come, saying she was happy to have lived such an amazing life and choosing to see the full side of the glass.

“You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined,” Elizabeth wrote.

“The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human,” she added.

On the bright side, all of us should learn to appreciate the people and the events in our life accordingly, she also said.

“But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn’t possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know,” Elizabeth wrote.
