Video game publisher Activision Blizzard has caused quite a stir with the announcement of the new Elite subscription system that will be launched later in the year and will deliver extra content for Call of Duty: Black Ops and for the upcoming Modern Warfare 3.

Eric Hirshberg, who is the leader of the Activision Publishing division, has stated, “We have engaged some top Hollywood talent to create linear video content that will be exclusive to Elite members. That content is inspired by Call of Duty.”

He added, “If you're a sports fan, there are lots of ways for you to connect with that hobby, that passion, not just on the day that the games are played, but throughout the week, and we wanted to give real entertainment value.”

Apparently, Activision plans to have the series ready to shoot by the end of this year, when it also makes a more official announcement.

It's not clear who might be involved in a Call of Duty television show, considering that it would require quite a few resources, both monetary and human, to deliver an experience that is similar to that of the video games in the series.

There are also questions about the story that could be told in a Call of Duty TV series, considering that most players want to control the characters of the single player and determine their own destinies, rather than being shown, without any interactive element, what they went through.

The Call of Duty Elite service will deliver some free content, like a performance tracker for each player that will allow him to enhance his in-game performance, and some paid elements, like access to all download map packs for the games and the ability to connect with other gamers.

The Elite announcement has gotten mixed reactions from the player base.
