Tough times call for tough measures

Electronic Arts is one of the biggest gaming companies out there, owning a variety of studios that create games for virtually every niche available on the market. From the hardcore shooters to the casual family games and the very popular franchises, EA does make a lot of profits, but, as recent studies show, it seems that these aren't big enough.

That's why we reported some time ago that the big gaming company will employ a variety of cost cutting measures in order to maintain a high degree of profitability and to prepare itself for the economic recession that might still affect the gaming industry. A delicate part of those measures implies laying off almost 1,000 employees, and the closure of the EA Black Box studio, the one responsible for the Need For Speed and Skate franchises.

Now, it seems that EA might resort to even more layoffs, as it tries to trim the ranks of other divisions. An inside source told Kotaku about the fact that the big gaming company might fire almost 400 people by March 30, affecting both contractors and full-time employees from various studios under the Electronic Arts umbrella.

According to the source, it seems that the company has already fired almost 45 employees from its EA Mobile division, most of them part of the Quality Assessment department of the studio. Although nothing is official yet, as EA hasn't released a press statement in which it makes these measures public, it seems that these tough times, where every dollar spent on an employee counts, affect even the big corporations.

Let's just hope that all of these layoffs won't affect the development processes of the games that will appear in the near future from EA, and that the big company will not fire any more employees.
