A freely downloadable iOS app called NYTimes Election 2012 is now available on iTunes from the renowned American news agency. The app acts as a resource for the most immediate political news as it unfolds throughout the day.

This is the first time an iOS app combines The Times’s world-class political coverage with the top campaign news from the Internet, which makes it a must have for anyone who owns an iDevice and gives a damn about politics, says the paper.

The flagship feature is the news feed which the NYT is careful to update constantly using its “dedicated editor”. The headlines served to you via the app promise to “reflect The Times’s authoritative news judgment.”

The stories are grouped by topic and the feed boasts a curated selection of links to articles, blog posts, videos and tweets from other sources as well. This ensures that you don’t get a biased daily report. Not that the NYT is biased.

There’s more. The paper says their new iPhone app also offers a cool Election Guide, which they describe as “a dynamic hub for campaign data compiled by The Times.”

“Our goal is for the Election 2012 App to be THE destination for people turning to their phones to stay on top of the most important campaign stories of the moment,” said Fiona Spruill, editor, emerging platforms, The New York Times.

“There is a mountain of political news and information out there. We’re trying to make it easier for people by pairing The Times’s distinguished political coverage with a curated take on the best stories from around the Web and the social media universe. And in the process, we’re continuing The Times’s tradition of digital innovation in our campaign coverage,” Spruill added.
