Wildlife researchers in charge of documenting the biodiversity found in Sri Lanka's Peak Wilderness Sanctuary recently went public with the news that a total of eight new frog species had been discovered in this natural park.

Information shared with the public says that all the frogs belong to the Pseudophilautus genus, whose representatives are known to only inhabit Sri Lanka and some regions of India.

Under any other circumstances, this piece of news would be listed as a good enough reason to light up some fireworks. However, it appears that seven out of these eight newly discovered frog species are already critically endangered.

According to Mongabay, the most pressing threats that these frogs are facing are habitat loss and pollution. Furthermore, small hydropower plants located nearby are argued to toy with their daily routine.
