Google acquired Picnik, an online photo editor, a few months ago and is now revealing the first thing to come out of the deal, Picnik integration in Picasa. The move was a no-brainer for Google and is a large part of the reason why it acquired the company in the first place. Picasa users will now notice the “Edit in Picnik” button and menu entry which does exactly what it says. The integration between the two products is seamless, but the Picnik app hasn’t been altered or re-branded in any way.

“A few months back we welcomed Picnik, the powerful online photo editor, into the Google family and today we’re happy to share the first of more exciting things to come,” Thomas Kang and Steve Leroux, Software Engineers for Picasa Web and Picnik , announced.

“Picnik’s rich editing tools are now integrated into Picasa Web Albums allowing you to experience them without ever having to leave your account. As long as you’re using Picasa in one of the Picnik supported languages, just click ‘edit’ from the edit drop down menu or from the new handy Picnik icon,” they explained.

You don’t have to navigate to another website to edit the photos, the Picnik app launches inside the Picasa Web tab. If you’re familiar with Picnik, there’s nothing surprising about it, the app is exactly the same.

You can do basic edits, like cropping or rotating an image, but also apply filters or add stickers. Picnik subscribers will also have access to the more advanced editing tools available to them in the regular app. Picasa should detect if the user has a paid account and launch the appropriate version. After you’re done editing the photo you can save it to your Picasa web albums by either replacing the original or creating a new copy.
