14 DAY TRIAL // The kiddie tablet market seems prolific enough for many companies to rush in with products, hoping to leave a mark. Educational start-up Metis Learning is tempting parents and kids alike with a colorful and fun new Android-based learning platform, called Eddy.
As we are accustomed with other slates targeted at kids, the tablet bundles pre-installed educational goodies in the form of 150 learning games drawing inspiration from subjects like language, math and creativity.
Specifications wise, the Eddy is a 7-inch tablet featuring a 5-point multi-touch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The powerhouse of the kiddie slate is a 1.6GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor combined with 1GB of RAM and backed up by 8GB of RAM (expandable to 32GB via microSD card).
The slate runs Android 4.2 out of the box and bears dual cameras (2MP on the back and 0.3MP VGA in front), a built-in mic, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, mini HDMI out, USB OTG and a respectable 3200 mAh battery.
Eddy will prove to be the perfect study and play companion for children aged 2 and 10. The slate provides a safe, violence free, parent controlled environment, dubbed the Eddy zone.
To prevent children from spending too much time on the slate (no late night cartoon watching) parents have the opportunity to set up specific time periods for when children are allowed to play/interact with Eddy.
The slate also supports the creation of multiple profiles, so in the case of families with more than one kid, parents can set up differently customized profiles to suit the needs of each child. Eddy also allows users to tap into the goodness of Google Play.
HLC, Swipe and Binatone have also spawn the Indian market with their own kiddie friendly tablets, but the Eddy stands out due to specs (which are actually pretty decent for a child slate) and the fact that it runs a relatively recent version of Android (4.2 Jelly Bean).
