The “Naked Gun” trilogy was undoubtedly one of the funniest police spoof films ever made. The recipe for success seemed to be a good plot, solid jokes and a very strong performance from actor Leslie Nielsen. Which begs the question: will newly-appointed Ed Helms as police detective Frank Drebin be able to fill in Nielsen's shoes?

Paramount Pictures are looking to revive the “Naked Gun” franchise and Ed Helms's name has been linked with this project. While undoubtedly having a lot of comedic experience in the past years, both on the big screen and on TV, having starred in major Hollywood productions such as “The Hangover” trilogy and “We're the Millers,” it's not yet known how Helms will manage to make the transition.

The first “Naked Gun” movie came out in the late 80s and the last of the series “Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult” hit theaters in 1994. That leaves a whopping 20 years gap for the next installment in the series.

Actor Leslie Nielsen passed away on November 28, 2010 at the age of 84, leaving behind a score of memorable roles in classic comedies such as the “Naked Gun” series but also “Airplane!”
