That anger is one of the most powerful derailers when it comes to a weight-loss plan is already common knowledge. Research shows that stress is also among the many culprits that render even our most admirable efforts of dropping a few pounds futile and exasperating, which is why learning a few easy techniques to unwind to prevent further weight gain is highly recommended, as wellness guru Laura Lewis says for That’s Fit.

Studies have shown that stress leads to more fat being stored in certain parts of our body, while also making dieting and working out less efficient in terms of results returned. Consequently, if we want all this hard work not to go to waste, Lewis urges, the first thing we should do is learn how to relax and eliminate stress. Lewis’ suggestions are well documented, but, of course, that’s not to say indulging in any activity that calms us down is not also an adequate alternative.

Watch a fish tank for a couple of minutes to completely forget about stress, Lewis says. “Watching a fish tank (even without fish) can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. Even watching a DVD or screensaver of fish reduces stress. Watching fish calms hyperactive children, decreases anxiety in dental patients, and Alzheimer patients tend to eat more food when a fish tank is placed in the dining room.” the expert says for the aforementioned publication.

Buying a Himalayan salt lamp and placing it somewhere to have it close by is also highly recommended, since these lamps are known for their many health benefits. According to Lewis, studies have brought forward specific info on their calming effect, while demonstrating that salt can bond “positive ions and mitigate a ‘charged’ environment.” This salt lamp acts in a similar way as sitting by the ocean for a short while does, the expert further states. On that same note, sitting by running water should also have the same soothing effect.

Last but not least, Lewis recommends being “scentsible” for a stress-free existence. “Aromatherapy can also reduce stress. Real essential oils from the roots, leaves, petals and stems of plants can have a wonderful impact upon the body via the limbic system – also known as the most primitive part of the brain. Smell travels directly to the limbic system, which in turn has an impact upon you physically and emotionally. It’s like smelling one of your favorite foods mom used to make.” Lewis concludes by saying.
