One of the world's largest independent game creators, CCP Games, announced yesterday a partnership with TransGaming, a leading developer of software portability products for the electronic entertainment industry, partnership that will make EVE Online available on Linux and Macintosh systems at the end of this year.

On of the main elements of the partnership will be the sharing of quality assurance and technical support responsibilities, although TransGaming will be leading the partnership and the OEM opportunities for the Linux version of the MMORPG game. Both companies will work as a single team to create a perfect integration of the original EVE Online code for each operating system.

TransGaming at first used their software product, Cedega, which allows Linux users to run Windows games on their platforms smoothly and without any problems, to introduce EVE Online to the Linux gaming community. The popularity of this solution indicated the demand for something better, and thus, the new release of EVE Online for Linux was created. This new version will have Cedega directly integrated into the game, and on Mac the porting will be done using TransGaming's Cider solution, a portability engine.

Halldor Fannar, CTO at CCP Games said: "We're pleased to extend our relationship with TransGaming, as the company's expertise allows us to deliver the most innovative MMOG to more platforms. By integrating TransGaming's excellent technology, we are able to keep our laser-focus on evolving EVE Online, while simultaneously expanding the EVE universe to even more players."

Also, Vikas Gupta, CEO at TransGaming Technologies added: "EVE Online has always ranked highly with our Linux users and there is significant demand for it among other platforms, including the rapidly growing Mac base. As EVE takes place within a single-server persistent universe, it's vital that the game is identical in every way across different platforms. This challenge is what makes the partnership with CCP both important and rewarding."

About EVE Online

EVE takes place in a cluster of stars far from mankind's original habitat, planet Earth. How far away, and whether or not that cradle of civilization still exists, is a mystery. Humans arrived through a natural wormhole and, gazing up upon an alien sky they had never seen, were completely unable to determine where this new world was located. From the New Eden solar system, where the gate of EVE once led to the old world, humans expanded in all directions at a furious pace, exploring and colonizing rapidly. Then, unexpectedly and seemingly unprovoked, the EVE gate collapsed in an apocalyptic catastrophe of a scale never before witnessed by the human race, ruining the New Eden system in the process. Thousands of small colonies were left in complete isolation to fend for themselves, cut off from the old world. For millennia, they endured, clinging to the brink of extinction, and only a handful managed to survive. For more information please visit the official home page at www.eve-online.com
