QUALCOMM is one of the leading developers of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology. They also research and develop other advanced wireless technologies. They have an entire history in this business and are also part of the world's top 20 semiconductor sales leaders. One of their most well known products is the 1xEV-DO technology based on CDMA, which now has reached its second revision.

The Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) is a wireless radio broadband data standard which allowed transfer of 2.4 Mbps in Rev. 0 and up to 3.1 Mbps in Rev. A. This technology is significantly faster than the EDGE technology, and for the Rev. B is was expected it would yield higher data rates of up to 4.9 Mbps. However, the new Mobile Station Modem (MSM) MSM7850 chipset, the first device compatible to EV-DO Rev. B, has shown in field tests that it averaged data rates of up to 9.3 Mbps on the downlink over 5 MHz of spectrum.

Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, chief operating officer of QUALCOMM and president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies stated that: "The evolution of CDMA2000 networks from EV-DO Rev. A to EV-DO Rev. B allows network operators to remain leading-edge in their service and performance offerings without the need for any infrastructure hardware changes. QUALCOMM's technology will allow 3G CDMA networks to meet next-generation data requirements."

The EV-DO Rev. B specifications are backwards compatible to Rev. A, and also have a couple of added features such as higher data rates through bundling multiple channels together, the usage of statical multiplexing across channels to reduce latency, hybrid frequency re-use to reduce interference from adjacent sectors, support for asymmetric download and upload services.
