Video game publisher Electronic Arts is preparing to announce a new third-person shooter game, with the development process requiring the hiring of a senior multiplayer designer and a cinematics focused director.

The EA Los Angeles studio has not said that the project and the job openings are linked, but the announcement for the multiplayer designer says that the game will be played from a third person perspectives and that the person hired will have to work with the new Frostbite 2 engine that DICE is developing.

The cinematics director position offered a further hint, saying that the new game will have strong storytelling.

The shooter space is pretty crowded this fall, with Electronic Arts preparing the launch of a new Medal of Honor game, created by Danger Close, and the impressive Battlefield 3, which is being handled by DICE, while rival Activision Blizzard is preparing a new game in the very successful Call of Duty series.

In the third-person shooter genre, Epic Games will likely dominate the attention of gamers with the delayed launch of Gears of War 3, the last game in the series that redefined the genre.

Considering that the Frostbite 2 engine will only be officially launched when Battlefield 3 is out, it's not clear when the new EALA shooter will get an official announcement or more information.

Some are speculating that the new game is linked to the Mercenaries franchise, which Electronic Arts has owned ever since the Pandemic studio has been shut down in 2009.

Other possibilities include a spin-off from the Medal of Honor series or an entirely new intellectual property that the publisher is aiming to evolve over time.

Electronic Arts has repeatedly voiced its intention of taking back leadership in the shooter genre from Activision, with multiple games set to challenge the well-entrenched Call of Duty.
