Nintendo saved the best for last at its press conference held yesterday at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. After revealing some pretty big news, the announcement of Super Mario Galaxy 2 left everyone in shock and awe.

That's right, the blockbuster title Super Mario Galaxy, that revealed very interesting puzzles based on planets and circular worlds, will get a sequel on the same console, which isn't something that Nintendo usually does, according to its legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

The Nintendo executive has revealed that Super Mario Galaxy 2 would contain 90% new levels, and the other 10% will feature some of the most popular ones from the first SMG but with different objectives in order to please fans.

“For the most part up until now on a single console we haven't made two games in a single franchise,” Miyamoto said. “But when we first made Super Mario Galaxy for Wii it was the first time we really experimented with the spherical worlds. We had a lot of things we were interested in doing and a lot of creative freedom that we had in that world that we were interested [in doing].”

The first objective of the development team was to “essentially create new variations on the worlds in Super Mario Galaxy,” but over time, many ideas popped up so complete overhauls were necessary for this new game.

In the video embedded below, which contains the announcement of the title, we can clearly see some of the new things that Mario will have in his arsenal, including a drill item and, most importantly, the help of Yoshi, the famous green dinosaur that is a fan favorite.

Look forward to the game in 2010, but until then, watch this video and stay tuned to Softpedia for more details.
