Polyphony Digital, as the developer, and Sony, as the publisher, have announced that they plan to bring the racing franchise Gran Turismo to the PlayStation Portable. The game is set to have the same atmosphere and dedication to realism as the other titles, which were released for home gaming consoles, and will be out on October 1.

Polyphony Digital is saying that Gran Turismo will be packed with no less than 800 vehicles which, between them, have more than 4,500 paint variations, and the player can race them on 30 tracks that can each be raced in two different modes.

The developers are stating that the game, despite the graphical quality showcased, will maintain a steady framerate of 60. According to Sony, the game will look very close to the way Grand Turismo does on home consoles, which would be quite a feat.

The main game mode will be called Challenge Mode and will allow players to take part in 100 racing events while unlocking more tracks and more cars. The level of difficulty racks up as the players get better and access more cars and tracks. As they are acquired, these can then be played again and again in Arcade Mode. Gran Turismo also has multiplayer that can be enjoyed via ad hoc connections with three other players. The connection can also be used to share unlocked vehicles and tracks with other gamers.

Sony is saying that Gran Turismo will be delivered to gamers via UMD disk and also via digital download from the PlayStation Network, which means that buyers of the new PlayStation Portable Go! will be able to enjoy the high octane fun offered by the newest racing offering from Polyphony Digital. More details will probably be made available before the release of the game on October 1.
