If you're wondering what the game is really about, aside from parkour and first-person melee combat, have a look

Developer Techland has released the first story trailer for the upcoming first-person action-adventure video game Dying Light.

The game's story has so far laid unexplored, Techland's reveals being geared more toward the functional, with plenty of parkour footage on the rooftops and some melee brawling against the zombie hordes.

The game takes place after the apocalypse, after a mysterious disease infects the citizens of the world and turns them into bloodthirsty animals. Mankind is forced to adapt to the new environment and do whatever it takes to survive in the ashes of the former cities, and a new world order emerges.

The biggest threat that mankind faces is not what conspiracy theorists would think. Far from being the Illuminati or alien forces controlling our governments, the biggest enemy man has is human nature itself, more specifically those who are too weak to kill and those who are too eager to do it.

The game's story has not been tackled so far, in spite of the fact that, as Naughty Dog's The Last of Us showed, it has the potential to be the ace up any game's sleeve.

The Last of Us shared a similar zombie apocalypse setting, and delved into the human psyche in order to find the real monsters threatening the world.

Hopefully, Techland's narrative will turn out to be every bit as compelling as its mature, all-or-nothing theme would imply.

A lot of potential

Techland created Dead Island before taking on Dying Light, and the game turned out to be very popular, in spite of a few technical issues, so the developer definitely has what it takes to make a successful and enjoyable video game.

The mix of first-person hand-to-hand combat together with the high degree of freedom afforded to players is bound to make Dying Light one of the most interesting titles coming out at the beginning of 2015.

If Techland manages to marry deep and satisfying gameplay with a heart-wrenching and challenging storyline, the game might just turn out to be every bit as exciting as the gameplay revealed so far suggests.

Gamers will assume the role of Kyle Crane, an undercover operative on a mission to infiltrate a quarantine zone in the fictional city of Harran, one of the last crumbling vestiges of civilization.

Dying Light is scheduled to come out on January 27 in North America and January 30 in Europe, headed to the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 platforms.
