When you think of photographic post-processing, most of us tend to go to Adobe software, but for those who want to make a change, there are plenty of options out there.

And this might be just about the perfect time to make such a transition. DxO and Digital Photographer are offering a super cool promotion, which gives a fee license to DxO Optics Pro 8 to just anybody who wants one. And there are no tricks involved.

Download DxO Optics Pro 8 until the end of January

What you see is what you get. However, there’s a slight caveat. Like most good things, this particular promotion has an end. After all, DxO is probably aiming to allure customers, by opening up the doors and letting users test features of the soft, hoping they will grow into it and pay money for other products DxO offers.

The promotion lasts until January 31, 2015, so if you’re unsure whether you should download the software on your computer or not, you have several months to think about it.

Before jumping for joy about this new found-no-strings-attached promotion, you should know the current DxO Optics Pro version has reached number 9, so you won’t be playing with the newest. However, if you aren’t familiar with the suite and you don’t want to go download a 31-day free trial of the Optics Pro 9, this might be the perfect opportunity to see what Optics Pro is all about without having to pay a dime.

If you don’t like it, so be it, you just end up uninstalling the program. If you do, the company hopes you might be considering to update to Optics Pro 9 at some point.

If you want the best features, you'll have to pay

Anyway, users on Reddit have been discussing differences between Lightroom and DxO and have also been made aware by the freebie. Some interesting comments pop up in the threat that should give you an idea of what to expect.

For example, the “PRIME noise reduction” in DxO Optics Pro 9 is said to be a lot more proficient than the one found in Lightroom, but you won’t get to enjoy the same perks with the free version.

Naturally, DxO is just throwing you a bone, allowing you to savor some features while keeping the really impressive ones for those who are willing to throw in a buck or so.

If you have decided this promotion is for you, head on over to the DxO giveaway page, but be prepared to submit your email address to grab the freebie.
