A lot of people thought that Duke Nukem Forever would never be released, especially under the implosion of original developer 3D Realms, but after acquiring the property, new owner Gearbox has not only finished up the single-player element but has also worked on a multiplayer component that has not yet been shown off.

Randy Pitchford, the outspoken leader of the developer Gearbox, has said that, “Multiplayer is something where, in order to 'get' it, we need to figure out a way that people can feel it, because multiplayer's something you need to play.”

He added, “You can get some things across in screenshots but not really. So we're kinda struggling with how we expose it so people understand what's there. The proof is in the pudding so to speak, so I don't want to talk about it too much.”

Apparently, the multiplayer section of Duke Nukem Forever has not been developed in house at Gearbox but has been created by Piranha, a studio from Canada.

Previous work done there includes the PlayStation Portable versions of titles like Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 and Need for Speed: Unvercover, as well as a Die Hard adaptation and work on MechWarrior.

Pitchford has not offered any clear details on how the multiplayer will work, but he has suggested that it will not be simple deathmatch and that fans of the series will have a great time discovering details about it and hope they can win in it.

The designer has also suggested that the developer working on Duke Nukem Forever does not try to take on industry behemoths like Call of Duty: Black Ops or Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

The aim for the team is to deliver a fun experience that is well embedded in the weird fiction of the Duke Nukem universe, with its swears, silly aliens and impossible-to-keep-down hero.
