Dropbox 2.8.2, a client for an online service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere, has been released and is now the latest stable version available.

After the Dropbox developers put forward a large number of experimental versions, a fresh and stable build of the client has been outed, along with all the improvements that made it into this particular branch.

Dropbox 2.8 has been under development for a long time and a number of Linux-centric changes have been made, although they’re nothing to write home about. Probably the most interesting is a dependency problem for Ubuntu that was finally corrected.

If you have ever installed the Dropbox client in an Ubuntu operating system you might have noticed that the indicator was missing. Although the service was running and the folders synchronized, users couldn't access the menu of the application. This issue has been easily fixed by installing a 32-bit version of a library, but the point is that it should have worked from the start.

According to the changelog, a problem that was causing a notification message to keep coming back has been fixed, a number of translations have been updated, and the Preferences menu is now opening on Mac OS X 10.4.

Keep in mind that the 2.8 series of the Dropbox client comes with a few interesting features if you're not on Linux. For example, users now have access to selective sync in the setup wizard for large Dropboxes, the Windows and Mac OS X systems now have auto sign-in installers, a notification is now displayed when the hard disk is full, and new icons have been implemented in the tray popup.

“Prompt to selective sync in the setupwizard for large Dropboxes - if your Dropbox is more than 10 GB or syncing your Dropbox would fill up most of your remaining hard disk space, we will prompt you to use selective sync to skip syncing some of your folders. Note that this prompt is skipped if you have previously linked this account, as we assume you'll have your selective sync settings from before,” reads the announcement.

Also, keep in mind that Linux users don't have access to binary files of the latest Dropbox client, unlike the users of other operating systems, who do receive binary files. This means that you will only get the source package and you will have to compile it by yourself. If you already have another build installed, you will need to purge it and start from the beginning.
