This summer, make a dash and go for the feminine ruffles and tiers - but don't overdo it

We've all seen it - well, rather we've been made aware of its existence via a series of very much-hyped red carper events, and now we have to find a way to let the new "ruffles and tiers" trend into our lives and find the best use for them in our own wardrobes without running the greatest danger there is - overdoing it and looking like we're being eaten alive by some giant fabric monster.

When it comes to wearing tiers, there are two basic rules of thumb: number one, make sure that the flounces don't swallow up more than half of your outfit. Rule number two says one flouncy item per outfit is more than enough to make a bold fashion statement. If we only opt for, say, a tiered floral skirt that skims the knee paired with a monochrome blouse or T-shirt and a light summer jacket, we're safe. Frills need silent partners. Have a look at the military-inspired ruffled gray Burberry coat in the first picture. Could you possibly imagine pairing it up with anything but plain black trousers and a simple white blouse?

If you're after thrills and frills, one option would be to go for one of the summer's ultra-fashionable floral-print maxi dresses - but make sure it's a model that's tiered from the neck down and not in the wedding-cake fashion. Stiffer, sharper layers are all the rage this summer. Wear them with simple, metallic gladiator-style flat sandals and a chunky wooden jewelry and you're sure to make a dash.

If you're thinking of wearing a ruffled top or a skirt (one at a time, not paired together), then don't be afraid to go for bold, solid colors. They're fashionable, will compliment your skin tone and will give you a dramatic, sophisticated look. Don't overdo it, and you'll be able to turn the "tiers and ruffles" trend into your best friend for the summer.
