Video game developer BioWare says that it is ready to introduce a number of new mechanics linked to the romance options in Dragon Age: Inquisitions, designed to link final outcomes to the core story rather than just the level of approval that a player can reach.

David Gaider, the main writer working on the franchise, is quoted by ShackNews as saying that “In Inquisition, trying to tell some romances in a style that we have not done previously. Previously, we had a lot of the follower content gated by your approval rating, whereas what we’re doing now, we’re having a lot more of your content event-driven.”

The tone of the conversation will be generated based on how two characters are relating, but the topics and the content will be linked to the moment in the game a player is experiencing.

Mike Laidlaw, the creative director, says that the team wants to create complex situations in which the entire cast of characters reacts both to the decisions of the player and to the events that are happening around them.

He adds, “So if you make really sweeping decisions in other parts of the game, that may actually change the nature of those interactions.”

The new Dragon Age will have a grander scope than previous titles in the series, and will take players to Orlais in order to deal with a huge tear in the Fade which is allowing demons to cross into the world humans inhabit.

Players will also have to deal with the rift between the Chantry, the Templars, and the Mages, who are in open conflict.

BioWare has not announced so far a full list of companions for the game.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be launched in the fall of 2014 on the PC, current-gen consoles, the Xbox One from Microsoft, and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.
