While talking about the crafting system in the new Dragon Age: Inquisition role-playing game, developer BioWare has confirmed that players can customize the gear worn and used by their companions in quite a few ways.

Dragon Age: Inquisition promises to take all the best features from the first Dragon Age: Origins and its sequel, Dragon Age 2, while allowing players plenty of freedom in regards to gameplay in both the story campaign and the multiplayer one.

Among the special systems in Inquisition is the crafting one, which allows players to create their own gear, ranging from armor to weapons and more, as well as to customize it by giving it different upgrades, bonuses, or a new name.

Players can also customize the gear of their companions

Besides creating and personalizing things for their own character, players can also venture forth and customize the gear used by their allies, giving them new pieces of armor or weapons.

"All companions have the same customization system as the Inquisitor, so all characters can be modified to your will," BioWare's Chris Pickford, the producer of Inquisition, confirms on the official website.

Other characters have their own themes that will reflect in the gear

However, BioWare's Mike Laidlaw, the creative director of the new RPG, emphasizes that all companions have different themes that are reflected even through the gear they have. As such, many pieces of armor will be automatically tweaked to reflect the nature of the characters, even if as standard they might look in a different way.

"The characters do have their own themes, though, so an Enchanter Mail will look different on Dorian, Solas, Vivienne, and the Inquisitor. Many properties do carry over, though, especially colors, so predominantly red outfits will still be red across characters—they'll just be styled to better reflect their personalities. We figure that, with its army of smiths, the Inquisition can handle a few tweaks here and there," Laidlaw explains.

Some armor is unique

However, some pieces of armor, presumably those of a special rarity or quality, will retain their design across all characters.

"Of course, if you find more emblematic armor, like, say, Grey Warden mail, you can expect that to look like its namesake on whoever wears it," he adds.

As such, players in Dragon Age: Inquisition can not only customize their own character, but also their companions in different ways. However, BioWare has made sure that the companions will still have personality underneath their layers of armor.

Inquisition debuts next month on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
