Just in time for the winter holidays, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen let us know how to keep our homes germ-free through a few easy-to-follow steps. Even though some might think their apartment is spotless, evil germs often hide in kitchens and bathrooms.

Every tool used in kitchens shelters dangerous bacteria and cutting boards make no exception. A recent study has revealed that cutting boards are far safer alternatives to plastic ones, YouBeauty informs.

It seems that bacteria living on wood cutting boards dries off in up to 180 seconds. At the same time, microorganisms can survive and multiply for an entire night on a plastic surface.

Dr. Oz also notes that a 100% germ-free house is a myth; therefore, antibacterial countertops are a bad investment. He suggests homeowners should simply clean their countertops with a clean cloth soaked in soapy water and then dry it before preparing food.

In case a future meal is based on ingredients hiding potential bacteria, like meat or fish, Dr. Oz recommends the usage of bleach or vinegar, as a much more eco-friendly option, to clean and properly disinfect the area and the same method can be applied to freezers and refrigerators, other areas exposed to germ contamination.

It's no secret that bathrooms are a man-made heaven for bacteria. One line of bacteria, located just below the water level in our toilets, called bacterial biofilm is particularly dangerous because it cannot be fought using common cleaning products.

Since its evolution can't be stopped, and these pathogens can easily land on household items like toothbrush, soap, towels or toys, the best methods of prevention is to put a cap on toothbrushes and to put the toilet seat down.

Obviously, all the items in the bathroom have to be properly cleaned, not just the toilet bowl or the sink. Mirrors, door handles, the bathtub and the floor also have to be taken into consideration and disinfected properly.

Dr. Oz also reveals that showerheads often hide mold and mineral residue than can contaminate bath water. To prevent contamination, vinegar usage is highly recommended, an eco-friendly disinfectant often much more reliable than other expensive commercial cleaning products.
