“OS X Lion & Mac OS X v10.6 provide third-party software for printers and scanners via Software Update,” Apple states in a separate Support article documenting Printer and scanner software for OS X Lion and OS X Snow Leopard.

“Simply connect the printer or scanner to the Mac. If software is needed and available, it will be automatically downloaded as part of the creation of the printer/scanner queue,” says the company.

The Cupertino computer giant advises customers to run Software Update before connecting a printer or scanner (if they haven’t done so recently), in order to update the Mac's database on what software is available.
