In anticipation of the iOS 4.3 release next week, the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, has rolled out iTunes 10.2, a new software update targeting Mac and Windows users alike.

Specifically aimed at adding support for syncing with iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices running iOS 4.3, the new iTunes also delivers improved Home Sharing, Apple said.

“Browse and play from your iTunes libraries with Home Sharing on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 4.3,” reads the iTunes 10.2 technical note on Apple’s Support web site.

Although it has been released for both Mac OS X and Windows, the software update packs security fixes that target Windows users only.

For example, libpng has been updated to version 1.4.3 to address multiple vulnerabilities, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution, Apple said.

The company behind the Mac operating system outlines that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard users have seen this issue addressed in Security Update 2010-007, and offers a link for those looking to learn more about this flaw.

Another security fix, targeting Windows 7, Vista, and XP SP2 or later, is described as follows:

“A heap buffer overflow issue existed in ImageIO's handling of JPEG images. Viewing a maliciously crafted JPEG image may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.”

Dozens of such vulnerabilities are patched in the iTunes 10.2 update for Windows, including a corruption issues in WebKit, due to which “a man-in-the-middle attack while browsing the iTunes Store via iTunes may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.”

iTunes 10.2 requires Mac OS X version 10.5 or later, Windows Vista (64-bit) and Windows 7 (64-bit), as well as QuickTime 7.6 or later.
