Apple has released iTunes 10.2.2, an update targeting both Mac and Windows users of the software, with a particular security focus on the Windows side. Both versions include the same bug fixes, though.

According to an Apple Support document, iTunes 10.2.2 provides a number of important bug fixes, including one for an issue where iTunes may become unresponsive when syncing an iPad.

The update resolves an issue which may cause syncing photos with iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to take longer than necessary, as well as a problem where video previews on the iTunes Store may skip while playing.

Finally, iTunes 10.2.2 addresses other issues that improve stability and performance on both Mac and Windows.

Apple also notes that iTunes 10.2 came with several new features and improvements, including the ability to sync with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4.3, and improved Home Sharing.

As noted above, iTunes 10.2.2 for Windows packs an extra fix - a patch for a recently discovered security issue affecting Windows 7, Vista, and XP SP2 or later.

A technical note posted by Apple yesterday reveals that Vincenzo Iozzo, Willem Pinckaers, Ralf-Philipp Weinmann, and an anonymous researcher working with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative have notified Apple of multiple memory corruption issues that exist in WebKit, the page rendering engine used by iTunes.

“A man-in-the-middle attack while browsing the iTunes Store via iTunes may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution,” the bug’s description goes.

For Mac users, iTunes 10.2.2 requires Mac OS X version 10.5 or later, and 200MB of available disk space. For certain tasks, additional requirements include QuickTime 7.6 or later, and Safari 4.0.3 or later.

On the Windows side, users must run either Windows Vista 64 bit, or Windows 7 64 bit. iTunes does not support the 64-bit edition of Windows XP.
