Sonico GmbH has released an update to one of the most useful translation tools ever created, iTranslate Voice for iPhone and iPod touch.

Version 2.0 brings AirTranslate, which enables on-the-fly translated conversations across two devices.

“Connect devices together and easily engage in conversation with other people,” says Sonico.

The user interface has been redesigned with new buttons, sliders, and icons. The development team says, “We questioned every button, thought through even the tiniest detail, scanned thousands of feedback Emails.”

“The result is a simpler and more engaging completely new iTranslate Voice that you're gonna absolutely love.”

There’s more. The settings panel is much more accessible now. For example, to change languages or voices, all you need to do is swipe up from the bottom of the UI.

A Presidential Voice Pack is included in this version (as an in-app purchase) to give you the voice of Obama, Bush, or Romney. Sonico admits it’s not a revolutionary addition to iTranslate, “but it's a lot of fun,” according to the company.

Last, but certainly not least, some new languages are now supported. If you’re a Thai, Catalan, or Romanian speaker, iTranslate now offers full voice recognition and text-to-speech support in your native tongue.

Hebrew, Croatian, Malay, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese are also supported with voice recognition, but text-to-speech has yet to be implemented (most likely in the upcoming software update from Sonico).

For those who aren’t familiar with iTranslate Voice, Sonico explains its purpose best:

“Can you imagine talking into your phone in one language and immediately hearing yourself in another language? That’s exactly what iTranslate Voice does. Just speak into your phone and it immediately replies in one of our 36 languages.”

You can use it on any iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 5.0, and it costs just $0.99/€0.89. iTranslate is not an iPad-native app, though it is compatible with tablets.

The developers also released a heartwarming promotional video which shows iTranslate in action (embedded below).
