iPhone Configuration Utility, the toolset that allows administrators to create, maintain, encrypt, and install configuration profiles, has been updated to version 3.3 for Mac and Windows.

Also used to track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, as well as to capture device information including console logs, the iPhone Configuration Utility is a free download from Apple’s servers.

The utility creates XML files known as “configuration profiles.” These contain device security policies, VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings, Exchange account settings, mail settings, and certificates, according to Apple.

Most of these elements, if not all, are required to permit iPhone and iPod touch devices to work with enterprise systems.

Specifically, it lets users create an Outlook message with a configuration profile as an attachment.

This person can assign users’ names and email addresses from their desktop address book to devices that they’ve connected to the utility.

While these features aren’t compatible with Outlook Express, both of them require Outlook.

According to Apple, users may need to install 2007 Microsoft Office System Update: Redistributable Primary Interop Assemblies, to use these features on Windows XP computers.

If Outlook was installed before .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1, this will be necessary.

iPhone Configuration Utility requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on the Mac side, and the following on the PC side:

- Windows XP Service Pack 3 with.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack1; - Windows Vista Service Pack 1 with .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1; - Windows 7 with .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1.

The utility operates in 32-bit mode on 64-bit versions of Windows.

When run, the iPhone Configuration Utility installer will send the utility to /Applications/Utilities/ on Mac OS X computers, or in Programs\iPhone Configuration Utility\ on Windows PCs.

Apple claims that configuration profiles created with iPhone Configuration Utility 3.3 fully support iOS 4.3 devices, hence the purpose of today’s update.

According to the Cupertino, California based tech giant, “you can use these profiles with earlier iOS releases, but payloads and settings that are not supported by a release are ignored.”
