Apple has released a new version of the iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac OS X. Using the iPhone Configuration Utility, iPhone owners can easily create, maintain, encrypt, and push configuration profiles, track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capture device information including console logs, according to the Mac maker. The software is free to download and use, while those who are planning on deploying iPhones in the Enterprise are offered a Deployment Guide.

“Configuration profiles are XML files that contain device security policies,” Apple explains, “VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings, Exchange account settings, mail settings, and certificates that permit iPhone and iPod touch to work with your enterprise systems.” “For instructions on how to use iPhone Configuration Utility, see the iPhone and iPod touch Enterprise Deployment Guide,” Apple adds, providing a link to its Enterprise section under Support.

The Enterprise Deployment Guide (located here: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/), includes valuable information on how to integrate iPhone or iPod touch with enterprise systems. The chapterized PDF file outlines the particularities of deploying iPhone and iPod touch, creating and deploying configuration profiles, how to manually configure devices, deploying iTunes and iPhone applications, configuring Cisco and VPN servers and even sample scripts.

Posted September 09, 2009, iPhone Configuration Utility 2.1 for Mac OS X is just 7.17MB in size, compared with its Windows PC counterpart, which weighs in at a hefty 31.11MB. On the Mac side, the software requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 (seemingly, Snow Leopard support is not yet available), while PC users must pack Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 and .NET 3.5 SP1.
