Microsoft made available Zune 3.0, to accompany the third generation of its digital media players in September 2008. Just ahead of the holidays, the Zune 3.1 update is now up for grabs. According to Microsoft, Zune users will be able to notice improvements in the firmware of devices, not only in terms of performance, but also when it comes down to Zune Social. In addition, Zune 3.1 brings to the table new gaming content for Microsoft’s digital media player, offered as an integral part of the update at no cost at all.

“The team has been doing a little extra work heading into the holiday season; in fact this week is a busy one. You are going to see some pretty cool things coming for Zune that we think you'll enjoy,” revealed Microsoft’s Cesar Menendez. “Zune gets a little update, which will bring a handful of free games, a refresh to Zune Social, and incremental improvements to the software.”

Checkers, Sudoku and Space Battle are the three new titles that are being added via Zune 3.1. On top of the new added games for Zune, Microsoft is also upgrading existing content. In this regard, the company indicated that Texas Hold’em would deliver a new multiplayer mode, as well as fresh single player difficulty levels with Zune 3.1.

“On the more techie side we focused on improving overall stability and performance in the Zune PC software and device firmware, such as improved play count reporting and content synchronization between the Zune software and the Zune device,” Menendez added.

Users will be able to easily update their existing applications by turning to check for the updates option included in the software. Of course, Zune 3.1 is also available as a standalone download. “The team also did some great work with the Zune Social visual refresh, to make it easier to navigate, as well as adding a new feature called 'like minded listeners,' which will let you see how compatible your music tastes are with other listeners and friends,” Menendez stated.
