Microsoft has made available for download a preview release of the next generation of Windows Small Business Server.

As was the case with the latest development milestone of Windows Home server codenamed Vail, the Redmond company refused to put a label on the testing Build of Windows Small Business Server.

In this context, the software giant only noted that it released the preview of Windows Small Business Server Codename “Aurora,” and not a Beta of the product.

“Windows Small Business Server Codename “Aurora” is part of the greatly anticipated next generation of our award winning Windows Small Business Server, and represents a significant departure from our traditional on premise version because Aurora will be Microsoft’s first server to deliver both on premises and cloud computing capabilities for small businesses,” revealed a member of the Microsoft Server and Tools team.

At this point in time, early adopters interested in downloading and testing Windows Small Business Server code name "Aurora" Public Preview will be able to grab the bits via Microsoft Connect.

Testers will need a valid Windows Live ID to sign into Connect, and join the Windows Small Business Server code name "Aurora" Public Preview program.

“Microsoft offers Windows Small Business Servers as a business solution for small businesses by providing a simplified setup, intuitive management of day-to-day tasks, comprehensive network and data protection, and rich business productivity features, combined with high performance within a Windows environment,” reads an excerpt out of the product’s overview.

Microsoft emphasized that Windows Small Business Server Codename “Aurora” is nothing more than pre-release software.

The Preview build made available for download on August 16th, is offered for evaluation purposes only.

“You should not install this in a production environment. Microsoft does not support installing in these environments,” the company noted.
