Microsoft is kicking up a notch the latest iteration of Internet Explorer running on top of all supported Windows platforms, including Windows 7, in relation to JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). The Redmond company has made available for download an update designed to correct problems identified in the native JSON feature in Internet Explorer 8. With the advent of IE8, the software giant delivered the first variant of Internet Explorer complete with native support for encoding and for decoding JSON. However, as the ECMAScript specification has evolved, which IE8 did not, customers started experiencing and reporting various issues, which the update offered is set up to resolve.

“These issues are caused by deviations between the native JSON feature in Internet Explorer 8 and the final specification. An update is now available to address these customer issues and improve JSON interoperability of Internet Explorer 8. This update enables JSON interoperability of Internet Explorer 8 to keep in conformance with the new "ECMAScript, fifth edition" standard specification,” Microsoft stated.

According to the Redmond company, the IE8 JSON refresh will resolve deviations in the following methods: JSON.stringify (value [, replacer] [, space]); JSON.parse (test [, reviver]); and toJSON (). In addition to Windows 7, the update targets all other supported Windows client and server platforms, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2003.

“JSON is an open, text-based data exchange format. Like XML, it is human-readable, platform independent, and enjoys a wide availability of implementations. Data formatted according to the JSON standard is lightweight and can be parsed by JavaScript implementations with incredible ease, making it an ideal data exchange format for Ajax web applications. Since it is primarily a data format, JSON is not limited to just Ajax web applications, and can be used in virtually any scenario where applications need to exchange or store structured information as text,” Microsoft explained.
