Hamrick Software has released a new version of its scanning application for Mac OS X, VueScan. Version 8.5.29 is available as a free download for existing users and is recommended for those running the software under OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

According to the release notes for VueScan 8.5.29, Hamrick Software was able to fix two problems with the program, one with HP networked scanners on Mac OS X, the other with HP scanners on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

“VueScan 0.1 was first released in 1998 with support for a single scanner on Windows only. Within 5 years VueScan supported more than 400 scanners and after 10 years of development, VueScan now supports more than 1,200 scanners on 3 operating systems and in 40 languages, has been downloaded more than 5 million times and has been purchased by more than 170,000 people worldwide,” Ed Hamrick, the creator of VueScan, said. Mr. Hamrick lists the following key features of the company’s flagship product:

- scans documents, photos and films; - lets you scan and edit text (OCR); - creates PDF, JPEG, TIFF and TXT files; - works with Windows, Mac and Linux; - supports over 1,200 scanners; - has been downloaded over 5 million times.

VueScan currently supports more than 1,200 different scanners on Windows, 930 on Mac OS X and 580 on Linux. The scanners are organized by vendor name and can be viewed here.
